Concept Testing

Research TrackScope UnknownFinal Stage

What it is

Showing target users early concepts (descriptions, storyboards, sketches, demos) to learn whether they understand the idea, see value, and could fit it into their situation. It can also test the riskiest assumption before building. It tests desirability and fit, not usability; stated interest is not later behavior.

Why use it

Assumptions the team is least sure of need testing before build. Concept tests check the idea while change is cheap.

Use this when

  • Several directions are on the table and the team must choose
  • A prioritized assumption about value is untested
  • Stakeholders disagree on whether the idea solves a real problem
  • You are moving from discovery into Implementation

You may not need this when

  • The concept is a low-risk change to a validated pattern
  • The main uncertainty is usability; use usability testing
  • The concept cannot be shown well enough to react to

Dependencies — what you need

  • A few concepts and the assumptions behind them
  • Representative participants; small samples show direction, not demand
  • Stimuli that explain the idea neutrally, without selling it
  • Testing tools (e.g., Hubble, Maze, Microsoft Teams) or in person
All dependencies by type

People involved

  • Design
  • Research
  • Product

Typical outputs

  • Reactions per concept: comprehension, value, concerns, fit
  • Assumptions supported, challenged, or unresolved
  • Evidence to pursue, revise, or set aside each concept
  • Language participants use for the idea

How AI can help

AI as augmentation — not replacement

  • Draft neutral concept descriptions and a guide that avoids leading questions
  • Review materials for wording that could bias responses
  • Organize notes by concept and assumption, for the researcher to verify
  • Suggest what each possible result would mean, before testing

AI prompt

A prompt for any AI assistant. It works only from material you paste in, keeps assumptions apart from findings, and leaves the decisions to you.
