What it is
Testing high-fidelity prototypes with representative users against success criteria set in advance, to see how the refined solution performs before development.
Why use it
High-fidelity testing reveals interaction, content, and visual problems low fidelity cannot, reducing the chance of costly rework after development.
Use this when
- The high-fidelity prototype covers the primary flows
- Development is imminent and testing is the final check
- Major mid-stage design decisions need confirming
You may not need this when
- Early testing was thorough and little has changed
- The feature is low-risk or the change minor
- Building and iterating is faster and cheaper here
Dependencies — what you need
- Representative users available
- Testing tools such as Hubble, Maze, Microsoft Teams, or in person
- Defined scenarios and measurable criteria
People involved
- Design
- Research
- Product
Typical outputs
- A design decision against criteria set beforehand
- A prioritized issue list with severity ratings
- A prototype ready for handoff, or the reasons it is not
Template

A fill-in structure for running this method: what to prepare, what to do, what to record, and how to read the result.
How AI can help
AI as augmentation — not replacement
- Help define measurable task scenarios and criteria
- Find recurring patterns in session notes
- Draft a severity-rated issue list from raw findings
- Suggest fixes, as ideas
AI prompt
A prompt for any AI assistant. It works only from material you paste in, keeps assumptions apart from findings, and leaves the decisions to you.
